How a husband can know how much he loves his wife

Dr. S.M. Davis recently wrote in his newsletter a Question & Answer topic on how a husband can know how much he loves his wife.  Below is Dr. Davis’ answer.

In Ephesians 5:25 we read, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

What is Christ to the church anyway? There are a hundred and a thousand answers to that question. He is our Encourager. He is our Lover. He is our Counselor. He is our Protector. He is our Friend. He is our Communicator. He is our Leader. He is our Teacher. He is our Helper. He is our Developer. He is our Discipler. He is our Healer. He is our Servant. He is our Saviour. He is our Provider. There is a sense in which a husband, in some way, is supposed to be each of those things for his wife.

Don’t misunderstand me here. I’m not saying that anyone is truly on the level of Christ or that any man could ever be all that Christ is to all of us. But God Himself is the One Who chose this analogy and there is some truth here that it would great for every husband to grasp.

You could take many of the songs where we sing about Christ and if a husband is what he ought to be, the wife should be able to sing that song with a few modifications and put her husband’s name in the words of that song. Think about the song, “A Friend I Have Called Jesus.” A wife should be able to sing:

“My best friend’s name is Thomas,
His love is strong and true,
It seldom fails, Howe’er tis tried,
No matter what I do.”
“I take my grief to Thomas then
Nor do I go in vain,
For wondrous hope he gives that cheers
Like sunshine after rain.”
“Oh, I could sing forever of Thomas’ love sublime,
Of all his care and tenderness for this poor life of mine . . . .”

We sing, “It’s just like Jesus to roll the clouds away.
A wife ought to be able to sing,

“It’s just like Thomas to roll my clouds away.
It’s just like Thomas to keep me day by day.
It’s just like Thomas all along the way.
It’s just like his great love.” Because Christ is the husband’s example!

Do you remember how I described to you how I feel about Jesus? How I love Him? How I adore Him? How I reverence Him? Think how Jesus feels when we say that? And that’s the way a husband gets to feel when he becomes like Christ, and his wife shares her appreciation for that with others.

I know all kinds of things can happen. I know there are wives who are just not what they ought to be, and are not going to be what they ought to be no matter what a man does. I understand that. But I suspect you would have trouble finding a wife that is not submissive to a husband who loves her like Christ loves the church.

Dr. Davis’ ministry is Solve Family Problems and he has a burden to help families and strengthen family relationships by helping families prevent or solve problems through Bible-based messages.

Contenders: Meet in Auditorium for Sunday School on Sept. 14

The Contenders Sunday School class will meet in Faith Baptist Church’s Main Auditorium this Sunday, September 14th, to hear Dr. Tom Sooter.  We will meet again in Bldg 7 the following Sunday, Sept. 21st to resume our study of Paul’s influence.

Weather may change tonight’s class activity

Last night, the Mobile BayBears were rained-out pushing tonight’s start time to 5PM.  Given the chance for rain tonight, it is possible that the game(s) will be postponed again (but I’m still holding out hope).

The call on the class activity will be made not later than 3:00PM.  If we still go to the BayBears, be at Hank Aaron Stadium at 4:30PM (travel time from church is 1 hour–in good weather).

The alternate activity will be at 5PM at Fox’s Pizza Den, 3179 Mallet Road in D’Iberville.  This is right next door to Lazer Craze which has video games, putt-putt, and laser tag.

Plan to watch the BayBears with the Contenders on July 19th!
