The Most Popular and Fastest Growing Bible Translation Isn’t What You Think It Is

From Christianity Today:

The 55 percent who read the KJV easily outnumber the 19 percent who read the New International Version (NIV). And the percentages drop into the single digits for competitors such as the New Revised Standard Version, New America Bible, and the Living Bible.

According to the 2013 American Bible Society “State of the Bible” report, The people who actually read the Bible, read the King James Bible.

Even though the top-selling Bible version is the NIV based on Thom S. Rainer’s Top Ten Bible Translation in the United States, the King James Bible is the translation that Christians go to.  Some of this may be driven by demographics–ratio of young verses older people who actually read vs. buy Bibles, but that doesn’t tell the full story.

The above graphic shows that the people who study the Bible (2 Tim. 2:15) as determined by online searches read and research the King James Bible.

Unfortunately, the real tale of the tape isn’t so good.  “[Another study] found that fewer Americans read their Bibles every day—just 9 percent, less than the 13 percent recorded by Barna and half of the 18 percent found by Lifeway.”

America needs revival today!

Please lift-up Pastor Kennedy in your prayers.

Pastor Kennedy spent the night in Memorial Hospital after undergoing his stress test yesterday.  Sometime today, the doctors will be operating on his heart (exactly what procedure is yet to be determined).

‘Tebowing’ may be trademarked but prayer isn’t patented

Tim Tebow has been a great example for Christians.  He has modeled a Christian life being prayerful, giving witness to the Lord Jesus Christ every time a microphone is in front of him, rising above conflicts, being a humble and modest gentlemen at all times, and avoiding the extreme license that characterizes professional sports in general.

“No atheist in a foxhole”

I originally thought that his recent trademarking of the phrase “Tebowing” might reveal a greedy side–not to fault him for having at least one weakness.  On second thought, Timmy may really have honest intentions.  He probably went to the New York Jets with the primary goal of increasing his reach for the Lord.  And if we take him at his word, he told Newsday (according to the Deseret News) that “Tebowing” was trademarked “to just control how it’s used, make sure it’s used in the right way.”

Maybe Tebow has honest intentions.  Given that a bunch of officially licensed products haven’t shown-up at Lifeway (not that I’m tracking it), I think we should take him at his word–his testimony certainly has earned him the benefit of the doubt.

Prayer is still free and effectual so Christians everywhere ought to pray that Tim Tebow remains untainted in the ever-critical eyes of the public and continues to shine a bright light for the Lord.

What must I do to be saved?

Acts 16:30, “And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

You may be saved from an early death, death from cancer, a would-be murderer, bubonic plague, and any number of other things that shorten.  You may make appointments, be late for appointments, and skip appointments.  But you won’t be late for your final appointment:

Hebrews 9:27, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”

If you don’t know that Heaven is your home for eternity, why don’t you make today the day of your salvation.  Pastor Dan Carr of Faith Baptist Church in Gulfport, MS explains what the Holy Bible says you must do to go to Heaven when you die.

James 5:14, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

Government should not be in the church but the church better make itself known in government.  There is a correlation between religious affiliation and political leanings.  So much for separating religion and politics.

The following two maps make that clear and highlight some problems for the true church (Acts 20:28).  The first map is the 2012 county-by-county Election Map:

2012 Electoral County-by-County Map (NYT)

From Ministry127, the following map provides the reported church/religious affiliation in the US by county.  If you are a soul-winning, Jesus-preaching Baptist, you should be moved by this picture:

Religious Affiliation by County (Ministry 127)

While the Electoral map only measures the views of those that voted, the Denominations map only measures the affiliation of those that regularly attend church while cover a broader spectrum of options.

Each map makes it’s own statement.  Compared to each other, we can (and will) draw some conclusions:

  1. There is clearly an alignment of Baptists (and Protestants) with Republicans and Catholics with Democrats.  Those that call Baptists…
